Thoughts for my Daughter

“18 — Graduated — finished 1st semester of college”! That is my typical response to others when I’m asked - “how is CJ doing now that she has finished high school”.

Truth — I know you are struggling. Nothing is making sense right now. From 1st through 12th grade, you had structure and limited choices to make in life. You had to attend school 9 months out of the year. You were raised in a society where education is chosen for you. You didn’t get the chance to practice making life decisions. Life decisions were made for you. Your senior year felt appealing knowing all the high school crap would soon be over and provide you the freedom to choose your path! All of the possibilities gave you an exhilarating dopamine rush. (My favorite is buying a bus and traveling the country!) I imagine an inmate might have a similar rush as their prison sentence approaches the end.

After the whirlwind of the last day of school, graduation day, grad parties, and hanging with friends…..brutal new life experiences appear. I remember the emotions! Saying goodbyes to long-time classmates and teammates. Watching friends leave for school. As well as a soul-crushing relationship breakup! While shouldering emotions that you are experiencing for the first time in your life, you have to decide your life’s future right now!! You better choose wisely! If you don’t, you will waste money, time, and energy…
