Parent Never Played, How to Help!

As parents we all want to help our kids succeed in their activities. What if we never played the sport? How can we help? There are many ways we can help our children with unfamiliar sports. Unfortunately, our pride can get in the way, which can cause confusion and bad habits as well! My experiences have taught me some humble and positive ways we can help our children succeed in unfamiliar activities.

Honesty is the best step! Explain that this is new for you as well! Our kids look up to us for knowledge. It can be difficult when we do not have the answer they are looking for. We tend to answer their questions based on our best guess. One approach I found that works extremely well is explaining to your child that we are all learning this sport. An example could be “Through the help of your coach and other available resources lets figure this crazy new challenge out together!” This provides parent and child a subject to really discuss together. Use this as an opportunity to really communicate “with” our kids and not just talking “at” them. Our kids will share ideas if they feel that they are equally learning with you. It will be rewarding for both parties as you will share success together.
